Where are They Now?
To Health and Long Life
Former ASU chemistry professor Ed Drake has always believed in the old marketing adage “better living through chemistry,” but these days thinks it might be better modified as “longer living through chemistry.”
In retirement from his home in Estes Park, Colo., Dr. Drake has been promoting the value of selenium for its cancer-preventive measures. He actually produces a liquid supplement called Nature’s Selenium and published a 2001 book, Selenium: Are You Getting Enough to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer?, available at Amazon.com.
“The facts about selenium are available in the peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature that requires some specialized training to read,” Drake said. “But, most people get their information from the various media. A general understanding of the issues concerning selenium supplementation will require exposure on national news programs.”
Drake first became interested in selenium in 1970 and produced his own selenium supplement in 1984. He has been taking Nature’s Selenium ever since.
An ASU faculty member from 1965-99, Drake discovered Estes Park as a student working toward his master’s degree at the University of Colorado in nearby Boulder. He decided right then that he would retire there one day. In their spare time, he and his wife, Nina, enjoy gardening, hiking and other outdoor activities.
