Art and Music: Li Zhi Yeoh- Horn Masterclass

Li Zhi Yeoh is a doctoral horn Teaching Fellow under Dr. William Scharnberg  at the University of North Texas (UNT). In 2010, he won the Concerto Competition and has led the horn quartet performing Schumann Konzertstück  with orchestra in March 2011. Consequently, he was awarded by the Brass faculty as the Outstanding Graduate Student in Brass Performance at the College of Music, followed by the Toulouse Graduate School’s Award as the Outstanding International Graduate Student from the College of Music. Mr. Yeoh will be joining the Dallas Opera Orchestra in 2012 production of Wagner’Tristan und Isolde.

At the age of 15, Mr. Yeoh was selected to represent Malaysia at the South East Asian Youth Symphonic Band Workshop in Bangkok, Thailand; and two years later, the International Youth Orchestra in Japan. In his high school years, he served as Principal Horn with the Chung Ling High School Band and Penang Symphony Orchestra under Woon Wen Kin

After graduation, Mr. Yeoh furthered his education by attaining Performance, Pedagogy & Theory Associate Diplomas from the London College of Music and Australian Music Examinations Board, awarded Distinction. In 2005-06 while on tour with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Yeoh was a soloist on David Amram  Horn Concerto and Lee Bracegirdle’s Trenos for Solo Horn, Winds & Percussion and also solo Horn on major Chamber Concerts. During the tour, he rehearsed the orchestra with Robert Boudreau,  in lieu of William Purvis (Horn Faculty of Juilliard and Yale School of Music) and Gregory Miller (Horn Faculty of Lynn University and Empire Brass). Mr. Yeoh’s other solo appearances were with the Central Wind Ensemble and University Science Jazz Band of Malaysia. 
            
Mr. Yeoh’s orchestra involvements were with San Angelo Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Elite International Chamber Orchestra, UNT Symphony, Chamber and Baroque Orchestra, Dallas American Asian Youth Orchestra, the Asian Youth Orchestra (founded by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, annually tours around major cities around the world), Commonwealth Youth Orchestra, Japan International Youth Musicale and Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra. 

As an active chamber musician, Mr. Yeoh shared his passion with appearances with the UNT Central Chamber Music Center, Faculty and Friends Concert and One O’clock Lab Band (performed with legendary Jazz Pianist, Dave Brubeck); Cologne Chamber Music Society, Germany; Malaysian Philharmonic and National Symphony Orchestra Chamber Concerts, and solo horn on Chamber Concerts of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra.
