Music: Master Class with Warren Vache (trumpet) John DiMartino (piano)

Two icons of the jazz world, pianist John di Martino and trumpeter Warren Vaché, will conduct a master class at Angelo State University on Friday, Nov. 9, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.              

The master class will begin at 1 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is open free to the public.  The ASU campus visit is in conjunction to the duo’s performance in the Cactus Music Series hosted by the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council at 8 p.m. that evening.  

A featured musician on multiple Grammy-winning albums, Di Martino is also a composer and arranger, and has recorded numerous CDs for Venus Records with his Romantic Jazz Trio.  He has performed and recorded with such music world notables as Kenny Burrell, James Moody and David “Fat Head” Newman, and has accompanied Jon Hendricks, Diane Schurr, Kelly Smith and Billy Eckstine.  He received Grammy nominations for his latest recordings, “Love,” with Cuban singer Isaac Delgado, and “Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B.”  He has also performed at Carnegie Hall and in the People’s Republic of China.  

Vaché has played with numerous recording stars including Rosemary Clooney, Benny Goodman and Woody Herman.  His major influences include classic musicians Louis Armstrong and George “Pee Wee” Erwin, with whom he studied for many years.  He has performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival and Playboy Jazz Festival, as well as the Nice, Marciac and Bayonne jazz festivals in France.  He has also performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Vienna Opera and the Royal Festival Hall in London.  He presently maintains a full schedule of recording, worldwide festival appearances, Broadway shows and club dates.
