Lecture: “A String Teacher’s Year In Iraq” by Dr. Maurice Kelley

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 4 p.m.
This presentation concerns a string teacher’s year building cultural bridges through music war-torn Iraq.

“In 2010 I deployed to Basra, Iraq as a member of the 36th Infantry Division Band. While deployed we established a relationship, with the assistance of the Provincial Recovery Team and the Department of State, with the Basra University Music Department.

“I had the opportunity to teach String Methods, direct a small student/faculty orchestra, and present an ongoing lecture series on String Pedagogy, Western Music History, Jazz, and the Elements of Music.

“During this presentation I will share my experience as an Army musician and music educator in Iraq. This story will touch on the dangers and challenges that face deployed servicemen and women, as well as focus on the hurdles Basra University faces in building a music department in a hostile environment.

“I will tell the inspiring stories of the individual Iraqi music students and faculty with whom I had the opportunity to work, the dangers involved in the partnership, and the impact of American Soldiers and Music Educators on the university music department.”
