Angelo State University will host trumpet virtuoso Dr. Leonard Candelaria for a master class at noon Monday, Oct. 20, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive. The master class will be in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.

Preceding the master class, Candelaria will present “The Trumpet as a Solo Instrument in Music History” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA), 1 Love St., as part of SAMFA’s Chamber Music Series. Tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for SAMFA members, and $7 for students, seniors and military.

Internationally recognized as a world-class trumpeter and distinguished artist-teacher, Candelaria served for 29 years on the faculty of the University of North Texas College of Music and currently is trumpet instructor at Birmingham Southern College and the Alabama School of Fine Arts. He holds a doctorate in music from Northwestern University in Illinois and has served as president of the 7,000-member International Trumpet Guild (ITG). In 2003, he was awarded the ITG Award of Merit “in recognition of a lifetime of significant achievement as a performer and teacher throughout the world.”

For his SAMFA recital, Candelaria will be accompanied by his wife, pianist Dr. Kathryn Fouse, associate dean for music for the School of the Arts at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. He will present a musical overview of trumpets and their history through the performance of a variety of representative musical works from the Middle Ages to the present performed on an array of trumpets of differing construction. Dr. John Irish, a close colleague and professor of trumpet at Angelo State University, will join the duo on several selections.
