Photo by Kartina Barbers A senior lecturer at Texas State University, Johnson has been teaching there and for Austin Community College for 16 years while also maintaining his own studio practice. His prints have been selected for inclusion in over 200 regional, national and international exhibits, both invitational and juried. Notable jurors that have selected his work include Sarah Suzuki, curator at the Museum of Modern Art, David William Kiehl, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Roberta Waddell, curator emerita at The New York Public Library. Johnson’s prints are part of several public and private collections.

A native of the Midwest, Johnson received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Dakota and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1997, Johnson became the master printer for the Serie Project, nonprofit organization founded in 1993 to promote the fine art of serigraphy, a technique that produces original, hand-pulled prints. In that role, which he held for 12 years, he collaborated with more than 50 artists to create limited edition screen prints. The Serie prints have been exhibited around the world and have been included in museum collections and featured in publications.
