Choirs: Cabaret at the Cactus

Friday, October 30, 2015 7:30 p.m. Free

The Angelo State University Chamber Singers and Vocal Ensemble will present “Cabaret at the Cactus” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Cactus Hotel, 36 E. Twohig Ave. in downtown San Angelo.

The program for “Cabaret at the Cactus” will highlight Broadway musicals from the 1940s through the 1960s. Selections will include “Anything You Can Do” from Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Younger Than Springtime” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific,” “One Hand, One Heart” from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” the “Lida Rose” barbershop quartet song from “The Music Man,” and a song-and-dance version of “Steam Heat” from “The Pajama Game.” In addition, the event will include music from Jule Styne’s “Funny Girl,” Mitch Leigh’s “Man of La Mancha” and Joe Masteroff’s “Cabaret” and a showstopper from the 1992 Disney musical “Newsies.”

Dr. Pamela Lee, ASU’s director of choral activities, conceived the program as a showcase for the singing, dancing and acting talents of ASU’s choirs.

“We have presented our ‘Spooktacular’ program for 13 years,” she said, “but I needed to discontinue that for a while and try some of my new ideas. Two years ago, we revived the ‘Holiday Madrigal Dinner,’ which actually started with the ASU Choir in the 1980s. For now, my plans are to present a ‘Holiday Madrigal Dinner’ in the fall of 2016 and this fall try a cabaret-style program. If the response to it is positive, then I’ll work on developing it into a supper club event, like the original cabarets.”

Retired choral music teacher Patti Wetzel is the choreographer for the show. ASU accompanist Dr. Michael Yenny on piano and Jim Bode on drums will provide accompaniment.
