Latino American History Series: Screening of “Prejudice and Pride (1965-1980)”

Thursday, October 1, 2015 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Free

Angelo State University will present the second installment of its “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History” program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center and will start with a screening of the fifth episode in the PBS documentary series, “Latino Americans.” The hour-long episode, “Prejudice and Pride (1965-1980),” will be followed by a discussion led by Drs. Kenna Archer and Christine Lamberson of ASU’s History Department and Dr. John Klingemann, chair of the department.

Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association, “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History” is sponsored by ASU’s Department of History and Porter Henderson Library. The series is also supported by the Tom Green County Library System, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, ASU’s Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, ASU’s Center for Community Engagement and Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. Dr. Kanisorn Wongsrichanalai of the history faculty and Kimberly Wirth, business manager and community engagement coordinator for the Porter Henderson Library, are the coordinators of the year-long grant.

“Latino Americans: 500 Years of History” is a public exploration of the rich and varied experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape the U.S. over the past five centuries and who have become, with more than 50 million people, the country’s largest minority group. The cornerstone of the project is the six-part, NEH-supported documentary “Latino Americans,” created for PBS in 2013 by the WETA public television station. The one-year grant awarded to ASU will be used to present at least five programs, including two screenings of the Peabody-winning documentary.
