Friday, November 13, 2015 7 - 9 p.m. Free

Angelo State University’s “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History” series will honor the work of Dr. Arnoldo De León at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, 1 Love St.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include remarks by De León, recently retired from the ASU history faculty, as well as by Dr. Neil Foley of Southern Methodist University and Dr. José Angel Hernández of the University of Houston, who will discuss De León’s influence on both their own work and the historical profession in general.

In a career spanning four decades, De León has been a pioneer and tireless researcher in the field of Latino-American history. After graduating from ASU in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in history, De León earned a master’s and doctorate from Texas Christian University. He joined the ASU faculty in 1973, and in 1987 was named ASU’s C.J. “Red” Davidson Professor of History.

As the author of 15 critically acclaimed books and editor of 11 more on Texas and Hispanic history, De León re-shaped contemporary understanding of Texas history, particularly as it relates to Mexican Americans. Among other honors, De León is a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association, West Texas Historical Association and Texas Institute of Letters. He won the Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Research Award for 2008-09; and in 2013 was honored by the National Association of Chicana/Chicano Studies (NACCS) Texas with the Premio Estrella de Aztlán Life Time Achievement Award.

The year-long series, “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History,” presented by ASU’s Department of History and Porter Henderson Library, has been made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Dr. Kanisorn Wongsrichanalai of the history faculty and Kimberly Wirth, coordinator of information literacy/research librarian for the Porter Henderson Library, are the coordinators of the year-long grant.
