The ASU Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection will host a guest lecture on historical aspects of the Concho Valley at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Historian and author Dr. Glen Ely will present “The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail” in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. His presentation is open free to the public.

Prior to the Civil War, stagecoaches used the Butterfield Trail to transport passengers and the U.S. Mail on a route from St. Louis to San Francisco that took them across the state of Texas. Ely’s presentation will take the audience on a first-hand trip along the Butterfield Overland Mail Route through Coke, Irion and Tom Green counties.

Following his presentation, Ely will conduct a signing session for his book, “The Texas Frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail.”

Ely is a Texas historian, author and documentary producer. He holds a doctorate in history from Texas Christian University and is also the author of “Where the West Begins: Debating Texas Identity.”
