ASU’s University Theatre program will present “Spitfire Grill” for its annual spring musical, continuing Friday, Feb. 17, in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Feb. 17-18 and 23-25, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for non-ASU students, and free for ASU students, Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU Activity Card holders. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Based on the Hollywood film by Lee David Zlotoff, “Spitfire Grill” tells the story of a feisty parolee who follows her dreams, based on a page from an old travel book, to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill. The grill is for sale, but there are no takers for the only eatery in the depressed town, so newcomer Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Entry fees are $100, and the best essay on why the writer wants the grill wins. Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely cookin’ at the Spitfire Grill.

Under the direction of Mike Burnett, assistant director of University Theatre, the student cast is composed of Taylor Sparkman as Percy, Samantha Lewis as Hannah, Taylor Dabbs as Shelby, Mason Tabor as Caleb, Michael Oriano as Sheriff Joe, Lindsey Jones as Effy and Bryce Real as The Visitor. Student understudies are Neeley Watson and Angela Cavada.

The student production staff and crew include Julia McDaniel, stage manager; Cheyenne Mickler, assistant stage manager; Tessa Verner, lighting designer; Brit Beggs, costume designer; Kyle Newman, sound designer/operator; Sonja Gonzales, prop master; Kameron Dennis, master carpenter; Eli Rodriguez, master electrician; Driana Bramer, charge painter; Kelli McLaurin, wardrobe master; and Simone Hutchinson, wardrobe crew/dresser.

Julie Hamil of the Lee Middle School faculty is the musical director, Chasity Neutze is ASU’s resident costumer, and Greg Gonzales is resident scenic designer.

Tickets go on sale for Arts at ASU subscribers on Monday, Feb. 6, at the ASU box office in the EFA Building. Ticket sales open to the general public on Feb. 8. The box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations and/or ticket information, call 325-942-2000.
