ASU will present the 21st annual Writers Conference in Honor of Elmer Kelton March 23-24 in the ASU Auditorium, which is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave N.

Anne HillermanAnne HillermanThis year’s featured speaker is best-selling author Anne Hillerman, who has continued the Joe Leaphorn Navaho Mystery Series created by her father, Tony Hillerman. She will give two presentations - at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on March 23.

The conference will also feature nine sessions where an array of Texas authors and poets will read from their various works. The guest writers include three Texas Poets Laureate and four winners of the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award.

Hillerman’s first Navaho Mystery Series book, “Spider Woman’s Daughter,” quickly hit the New York Times best-seller list and won the prestigious Western Writers of America Spur Award for Best First Novel in 2013. The novel focuses on Bernadette Manuelito, a minor character introduced in Tony Hillerman’s books as protégée of Lt. Joe Leaphorn and girlfriend of Navaho tribal cop, Jim Chee.

“Rock with Wings,” a second book with Bernie as protagonist, followed in 2015. A third novel, “Song of the Lion,” is scheduled for release by HarperCollins in April 2017.

Along with her husband/photographer Don Strel, Anne is also the author of “Tony Hillerman’s Landscape: On the Road with Chee and Leaphorn.” This book has been honored as the best photo book of the year by Mountains and Plains Booksellers.
