Library Staff Recognized for Service Milestones
March 14, 2016
Several Library staff members are being recognized for their years of service with Angelo State University!
Not only is Angelo State University a great place for higher education, it is also a great place to work. This year many University staff members are celebrating significant years of service milestones. The Porter Henderson Library is happy to congratulate Angela Skaggs, Cindy Belden, and Susan Elkins for their years of excellent service.
Angela Skaggs, 25 Years with ASU!
Angela Skaggs is the Library Assistant Director for Access Services, and has been with the Library for 25 years! After graduating from Trinity University with a B. A. in Education, English, and History, Angela taught 7th grade History for one year. She received her Master’s degree in Library Science from George Peabody College for Teachers (now College of Education at Vanderbilt University), and became a circulation Librarian at Belmont College. After her husband completed his Master’s in Divinity at Vanderbilt, they returned to Texas where her son was born. She became a stay-at-home mom for a time, and returned to academia when she began working in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Texas A&M University. Five years later, she returned to her chosen work field when she came to work at ASU in 1990 as the Circulation Librarian.
Angela’s favorite memory over her nearly 26 years at ASU is the implementation of the remodeled Learning Commons of the Library. Angela played a large part in bringing the vision to fruition along with the cooperative efforts of the Library staff. She understandably feels a sense of pride when she walks through the Commons to see students using the facility in the ways it was intended. Another favorite of Angela’s is the regular visits of the Therapy Dogs during pre-finals week every semester. Thanks to Angela’s efforts, the first event was a huge success and every one after continues to grow in popularity.
When asked what she loves the most about working for ASU, Angela answers that she honestly enjoys what she does. She enjoys the feeling of making a difference for students, faculty, and staff at what she calls “an excellent institution.”
Susan Elkins 5 Years with ASU!
Susan Elkins has been working at the Porter Henderson Library for 5 years! Susan had previously worked at in South Carolina, but moved to San Angelo in 2011 for the chance to work in an academic library. As the Electronic Serials Librarian, Susan works on many different projects from social media to the digital library. She enjoys knowing that her job never feels dull or tedious and that every day offers something new and interesting. Her fondest memories are of her colleagues, so it’s no surprise that her favorite moments are often at birthday celebrations and student appreciation luncheons.
Cindy Belden 5 Years with ASU!
Cindy began her library career as Library Director for the Carnegie Library of Ballinger in 1995. This experience lead her to the decision to pursue a Master’s in Library Science at the University of North Texas in 2005. After graduating in 2008, Cindy interned at the Porter Henderson Library to gain more experience working in academic libraries. In 2010, she was hired as the Government Documents Library Assistant, and was finally promoted to Senior Cataloging Librarian in 2016.
Cindy’s favorite memories of working for ASU revolve around the Student Food Feasts the Library holds at the end of every semester to celebrate the Library student assistants. Her favorite thing about working for ASU is the talented people she gets to work with every day.
The Library thanks you for all you have done during your years of service, and hope you continue to better the University and Library with your efforts. Here’s to many more!
