ASU ‘Rams Read’ Program Debuts
February 14, 2012
ASU head football coach Will Wagner suggested the program to San Angelo Independent School District officials as a way for his players to give back to the community and to reinforce in young students the value of reading as a key learning component in their education.
“This is a program we implemented in my previous football program at Northwest Missouri State,” Wagner said. “It helped the college students grow as much as it helped the younger kids.”
Rams football players will wear their jerseys and visit the three campuses weekly. They will read to primary students or assist older elementary students with reading comprehension.
“What elementary child could resist reading with a fine young ASU football player?,” said Dr. Carol Ann Bonds, superintendent of the San Angelo ISD. “We are thrilled to have these role models visit our campuses and inspire our students to enjoy reading! The Rams Read program will be a gift to SAISD!”
Rams assistant head football coach Theron Aych is coordinating the program schedule with Steve Gill, SAISD’s executive director of schools, and the elementary school principals.
