Arts and Humanities Dean Published in International Journal

Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne, dean of Angelo State University’s College of Arts and Humanities, has published a research article in the September 2016 issue of The Reading Matrix, an international journal for second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne Dr. Carolyn Gascoigne Titled “Returning to Reading: An Online Course in French offers a Snapshot of L2 Reading Habits and Trends,” the article addresses the role that students’ print and online reading habits play in the learning of a second language (L2). The primary research subjects were undergraduate students taking a new online French course at the University of Nebraska Omaha. 

The Reading Matrix is a peer-reviewed professional online journal dedicated to exploring issues related to second language reading, literacy, learning and teaching. Its editorial board is made up of scholars in the fields of second language acquisition and linguistics, who review only original manuscripts for potential publication. The September 2016 issue that includes Gascoigne’s article is available at http://readingmatrix.com/current.  

Gascoigne joined ASU as the first dean of the newly formed College of Arts and Humanities on July 1. She previously spent 19 years on the faculty at the University of Nebraska Omaha, most recently as graduate program chair in the Department of Foreign Languages. She also served as acting assistant vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at UNO from 2011-12, was chair of the Foreign Languages Department for nine years and earned the Peter Kiewit Professorship for five years. 

She holds a doctorate in French/second language acquisition from Florida State University, and her many honors and awards include the American Association of Teachers of French-Nebraska Teacher of the Year designation and the UNO Excellence in Teaching Award.
