Economics Prof Named New Norris Family Chair in Business

Dr. Jamal Husein, a professor of economics at Angelo State University, has been named the new holder of the Norris Family Chair in Business in the ASU College of Business.

Dr. Jamal Husein Dr. Jamal Husein The Norris Family Chair in Business was established as Angelo State’s first-ever endowed chair in December 2007 through a $1 million donation from ASU alum Lloyd Norris and his family. An endowed chair is the most prestigious academic appointment available for university faculty. 

“The College of Business is very pleased to have Dr. Jamal Husein serve as the new holder of the Norris Family Chair in Business,” said Dr. Clifton Jones, dean of the College of Business. “Dr. Husein has been successful in both industry and academia, with five years of experience in the private sector and 15 years of experience as a faculty member at ASU. He has published numerous scholarly articles, served on many committees, and received numerous awards for his teaching, research and service.” 

An ASU faculty member since 2002, Husein teaches courses in macro- and micro-economics, comparative economic systems, international economics, managerial economics, and money and banking. The primary focus of his research and scholarly articles is the economic issues and implications of import/export activities, tourism and foreign aid in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions, including his native Jordan. He has received several ASU Faculty Innovation and Faculty Research Enhancement Program grants to fund his research. 

He has also chaired sessions at international academic conferences and is a peer reviewer/referee for numerous industry journals, including Applied Economics Journal, Economics Bulletin, Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events, Journal of Developing Areas and Baraton Interdisciplinary Research Journal.  

Also active on campus and within the College of Business and Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Husein has served on numerous boards and committees since his arrival at ASU. He currently serves on the International Education Committee, University Athletic Council and Carr Academic Scholarship Program Advisory Committee, among others. He has also led international study abroad experiences to Germany and Scotland. 

“As the Norris Family Chair in Business,” Jones said, “Dr. Husein will serve as a champion for business education throughout the university, assist the local community with business and economic issues, promote joint research projects with other College of Business faculty members, and seek external grants and contracts to support the college and his department.” 

Among his many honors and awards, Husein was named the College of Business Outstanding Faculty Member in Research for 2014-15 and the College of Business Outstanding Faculty Member for Service in 2008-09 and 2013-14. He was also named 2006-07 Professor of the Year by the ASU Student Government Association and was nominated for the ASU President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Research/Creative Endeavor in 2011 and 2013. 

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Husein also has five years of industry experience, serving as a business analyst and economist for AT&T, Deloitte & Touche, and Arthur Andersen LLP in San Francisco, Calif. 

Husein holds a bachelor’s degree from Yarmouk University in Jordan, a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the University of New Haven and a Ph.D. in economics from Utah State University.
