ASU Announces Spring Graduation Speaker
April 02, 2012
Carroll will address graduates of the College of Business and the College of Education during a 10 a.m. ceremony that Saturday. He will speak to graduates of the College Arts and Sciences and College of Health and Human Services in a 2 p.m. ceremony. More than 700 ASU graduates are expected to walk across the stage during the two graduation exercises.
A 1988 ASU graduate, Carroll now works as an author, motivational speaker and consultant, which together make up his personal job title, “Katalyst.” He travels internationally to speak to a variety of audiences, from CEOs and employees of Fortune 500 companies to school children, to inspire them to embrace their spirit of play and creativity to maximize their human potential and sustain more meaningful business and personal growth. As a consultant, he has worked on creative endeavors for the National Hockey League, ESPN, Starbucks, the National Basketball Association, the Walt Disney Company, Mattel, Hasbro, Procter & Gamble, Capital One and the Discovery Channel, among others.
A native of Philadelphia, Carroll was reared by his grandparents and spent much of his time on the playground with a red rubber ball. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, spending 10 years as an interpreter and translator and gaining fluency in Croatian, Czech, Serbian and German. While stationed as an instructor at Goodfellow AFB, he enrolled in the ASU athletic training program.
After graduating from ASU with his bachelor’s degree and athletic training certification, Carroll worked as a trainer at the high school and collegiate levels back in Philadelphia. He then became head athletic trainer for the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers before being hired away for a creative marketing position with Nike. He left Nike in 2004 to create Kevin Carroll Katalyst LLC, and is a frequent visiting adjunct lecturer at colleges and universities throughout the U.S.
Also an accomplished writer, Carroll is the author of three books, Rules of the Red Rubber Ball, What’s Your Red Rubber Ball? and The Red Rubber Ball at Work, published by ESPN, Disney Press and McGraw-Hill.
In addition to his ASU degree, Carroll holds a master’s degree in health education from St. Joseph’s University and an associate degree in interpreting and translating from the Community College of the Air Force.
