ASU FAME Concert, Auction Features Music and Artwork

March 24, 2011

Music and art will be in the spotlight at Angelo State University during the 14th annual ASU Friends of Art and Music Education (FAME) Showcase Concert and Plate Auction on Tuesday, March 29, in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. event are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, with students admitted free. The C.J. Davidson Conference Center is located in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The plate auction, which will end after this year’s event, will allow silent-auction bids before the concert and at intermission on 15 local artists’ and celebrities’ creations. The winning bids will be announced during the concert. Artwork by ASU students will also be on display and available for sale in the UC Art Gallery with proceeds to be split between the artists and the FAME scholarship fund.

The concert will include performances by the ASU Wind Ensemble, Concert Chorale, Jazz Combo, Brass Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet and Music Theater Workshop.

The Jazz Combo will perform the “Mahogany Hall Stomp” by Spencer Williams and “My Funny Valentine” by Richard Rodgers. The Percussion Ensemble will contribute “La Vida Es Un Carnaval,” while the Woodwind Quintet will play a movement of Klughardt’s “Quintet, Op 70.”

ASU’s Concert Chorale will sing “A Jubilant Song” by Norman Dello Joio and follow that with Aaron Copland’s “Ching-a-Ring Chaw.” The Brass Choir will perform “Overture for a New Day” by Andrew Wolfe and “Girl With the Flaxen Hair” by Claude Debussy. The Opera Music Theatre Workshop will present “Mr. Cellophane” from “Chicago” by John Kander. The Wind Ensemble will perform “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger and “Kirkpatrick Fanfare” by Andrew Boysen Jr.

Over the past 14 years, ASU FAME has provided more than 275 scholarships to ASU art and music students totaling more than $160,000.
