Ram Powerlifters Excel at Collegiate Cup

Six members of Angelo State University’s Ram Powerlifting Club brought home medals, including two championships, from the U.S.A. Powerlifting 2017 Collegiate Cup contest held Dec. 2 in San Antonio.

Ram Powerlifting Club at the 2017 Collegiate CupRam Powerlifting Club at the 2017 Collegiate CupCompeting against teams from colleges and universities across Texas, the ASU team notched two individual first-place finishes, one second-place and three third-places in various categories of both “equipped” and “raw” contests. Equipped contests allow competitors to wear special clothing, including bench shirts, squat suits and knee wraps, that allow them to lift heavier weights. Raw contests are conducted without any special clothing. 

Lifters complete three attempts each at squat, bench press and deadlift. The qualifying total is the sum of the highest weight lifted in each of the three disciplines. 

ASU’s top finishers by category and weight class were: 

Women

  • Saron Mendoza of Levelland: First Place, Collegiate Raw, over 185 pounds
  • Brittney Barksdale of Burnet: First Place, Collegiate Raw, 185 pounds
  • Victoria Reyna of Midland: Second Place, Collegiate Raw, over 185 pounds
  • Caitlyn Buck of San Angelo: Third Place, Collegiate Equipped, 138 pounds 

Men

  • Jayson Zamora of San Antonio: Third Place, Collegiate Raw, 145 pounds
  • Haddon Stokes of Abilene: Third Place, Collegiate Equipped, 230 pounds 

Other Ram Powerlifting Club members who competed at the Collegiate Cup were Ben Garza, Ben Bowman, Angel Enriquez, Joshua Ontiveros, Amy Soto, Adrianne Thomas and Breanna Trevino. 

On a related note, club president Joshua Williams of Azle competed at the U.S.A. Powerlifting Longhorn Open on Nov. 18 in Austin. He took second place in the College Raw category in the 185 pound weight class. 

ASU club sports teams are registered student organizations that are directed and funded by the Office of Student Life and overseen by the Sports Club Council. The faculty sponsor is Dr. Adam Parker, associate professor of kinesiology.
