Rafael and his family have lived in Sterling City for many years. Many small communities like Sterling City do not have some services of the larger cities. Rafael knew there was a real need for locals to have their vehicles serviced. He, his father and his brother put their heads and capital together and decided to make this a reality. An old service station was for sale and Rafael thought this would be a perfect location for their automotive shop.

He was not sure what to do next, so he met with Advisor Paul Howard of the Angelo State University • Small Business Development Center. Rafael wanted to do business with their local bank so Paul suggested he start working on startup costs and a business plan. After working diligently on the plan and with the SBDC’s guidance, Rafael presented it to his banker and was approved for the loan. Rafael says, “The SBDC helped us with the right information and with a lot of help to open our business.”

Sterling Automotive is now open to serve the locals and provide help to those traveling through the community as well. It has created five jobs which will help the local economy in Sterling City.
