To define civic responsibility, using references
Access to journals, articles, books, newspapers, and/or Web
sites that discuss civic responsibility
A take-home assignment requiring an hour or less, plus in-class discussion
requiring 45 minutes or less
Ask students to define civic responsibility using at least two sources. What knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors should an effective citizen have? Ask students to explain the connections they see among service, civic responsibility, and democracy.
Discuss students’ responses in class. Are their definitions different? How? What are some common characteristics that the students described? Do most students see connections among service, civic responsibility, and democracy?
