Weather Postpones ASU Guest Speaker

August 28, 2011

Due to travel issues caused by Hurricane Irene, the guest presentation by Emmy Award-winning news anchor John Quiñones for Angelo State University’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Speaker Series has been rescheduled from Monday, Aug. 29, to Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Quiñones’ presentation, titled “Lessons Learned,” will run from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday in the Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center and is open free to the public. Attendees may bring their lunch or purchase a boxed lunch at the event. The University Center is located at 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Co-anchor of ABC’s “Primetime” news magazine program, Quiñones has reported extensively for ABC News, predominantly serving as a correspondent for “Primetime” and “20/20.” His recent work includes hosting a series of “Primetime” reports titled “What Would You Do?,” which captures people’s reactions when confronted with dilemmas compelling them to either act or walk away.

The winner of seven national Emmy Awards for his reporting, Quiñones has been at ABC News since 1982. He has also won a Gabriel Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Prize and a First Prize in International Reporting. Prior to joining ABC News, he worked at TV stations in Chicago and Houston. He holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and a master’s degree from the Columbia School of Journalism.

The HSI Speaker Series is one of several ASU initiatives funded by the Title V Hispanic Serving Institution Grant ASU received in the fall of 2010. The series was created to bring experts to the ASU campus to speak on various topics, including student development, teaching, technology, cultural awareness, inclusion, diversity and academic support services. The speakers will also participate in workshops and educational sessions for ASU faculty, staff and administrators as part of the Professional Development component of the Title V HSI Grant.
