ASU Sets Rambunctious Weekend

August 15, 2013

Angelo State University will kick off the 2013 fall semester with its annual Rambunctious Weekend activities Aug. 23-25 at various campus locations.

Students begin moving into residence halls on Friday, Aug. 23, and will be greeted with a wide variety of activities designed to help new students make the transition to college life and to welcome back returning students.

Residence halls will receive students beginning Friday at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the weekend with assistance from ASU staff and community volunteers.  Activities open with a free freshman welcome lunch for students and their families from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Pavilion area near the Plaza Verde residence hall on the east side of campus.

Other Friday activities include a social for transfer students and student veterans at 3:30 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, Convocation at 5 p.m. in the Junell Center/Stevens Arena and a brisket dinner at 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  That will be followed by special events and entertainment from 6-9 p.m. and an ice cream break from 9-9:30 p.m., all at the Pavilion.

The special events and entertainment will consist of a Segway obstacle course, photo dry erase boards, caricature and body paint artists and a 200-foot zip line.  Friday activities will wrap up with the RAMazing Race from 10 p.m. to midnight at the Pavilion.  Teams of students will stop at locations around campus to look for clues to the next stop.  The race is designed to help students find ASU locations they will likely need as they acclimate to life on campus.

Saturday activities begin with a farewell breakfast from 9-10 a.m. in the Food Service Center to give families a chance to say goodbye before students become involved with other activities scheduled for the weekend.  Families can then attend a parent and family reception at 10:30 a.m. in the Plaza Verde Clubhouse followed by campus tours for families from 11 a.m. to noon.

Students have the option of joining the First-Year Quest, a surprise outdoor activity, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pavilion.  Then students can choose to participate in a flag football tournament from noon to 3 p.m. in the Campus Green area.

Saturday evening activities will include a free fajita cookout from 6-8 p.m. in the Pavilion area, followed by a student organization tailgate party for new students to mingle with representatives of ASU’s 100-plus student groups in an area near the Pavilion.

After the tailgate party, students are encouraged to attend a spirit rally from 8:15-9:30 p.m. in the Junell Center/Stevens arena. The event will feature student-athletes, the ASU Ram Band, Angelettes dance team and ASU cheerleaders.  At the conclusion of the spirit rally, students can stay in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena for a black light dance party that will last until 11 p.m. Then students can head over to the Food Service Center for a pancake snack at midnight.

Sunday activities begin at noon with Angelo Serves, a new community service project.  Students will meet up at the Pavilion and eat a free sack lunch before being assigned a service project with a local nonprofit agency from 1-3 p.m.

The ASU Lake House will then host a welcome back picnic and outdoor activities from 4-8 p.m.  Activities will include water inflatables, kayaking and a San Angelo community fair.  A campus shuttle will take students to and from the Lake House with pick-up and drop-off points near the Plaza Verde and Centennial Village residence halls.

Throughout Rambunctious Weekend, the Center for Human Performance will be open with exercise and sports-related options on Friday from 7:30 a.m.-midnight, Saturday from 7:30 a.m.-midnight and Sunday from 2-8 p.m.
