ASU University Center Ranked

October 16, 2013

Angelo State University’s Houston Harte University Center has been named one of the “25 Most Amazing Student Union Buildings in the U.S.” by BestCollegeReviews.org, an independent online college and university ranking guide.

Overall, ASU’s University Center was ranked No. 22 in the U.S. and represents the only Texas institution in the top 25.  The rankings encompass numerous factors, including architectural notability and student satisfaction.

According to news release from BestCollegeReviews.org, “The student union building, also known as a student activity center or SAC, is a facility designed for student recreation and socialization.  The goal of a high-quality student union building is to be the community center of the college or university, often including fun activities, such as billiards, bowling, ping pong, arcades or even rock walls.  They also are used to hold entertainment, such as live musical performances or even small-scale academic conferences.  The Best College Review’s ranking aims to measure the best of the best, taking these various purposes into consideration.”

James Arney, chief author and researcher for the list, said, “American universities have been on a building and renovation spree in the past decade, producing some truly awe-inspiring student unions.  College kids today have it as good as they ever have when it comes to facilities, and this list amply illustrates that fact.”

In addition to gaming tables and student lounge areas with large-screen TVs, ASU’s University Center houses the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Multicultural Center, Student Government Association, Center for Student Involvement, Career Development Center, Concho Educators Federal Credit Union, ASU Bookstore, ASU post office, a snack bar, a coffee bar, the ASU West Texas Collection and the C.J. Davidson Conference Center.

“The national recognition of the Houston Harte University Center is a reflection of Angelo State’s commitment to having state-of-the art, modern and student-centered facilities,” said Dr. Javier Flores, ASU vice president for student affairs and enrollment management.  “The University Center is truly a place for students to interact and connect with other students, as well as faculty and staff, in a social and supportive environment.  The students, faculty and staff are very proud of the University Center and the services it provides.”

The majority of the student centers on the top 25 list belong to Division I universities, including Oklahoma State, Ohio State, University of Florida, University of Michigan, Purdue, Kansas State, Columbia, Brigham Young, Oregon State, Boston University and Cornell.
