ASU Concert to Feature Area High School Honor Musicians

January 22, 2010

Honor musicians from West Texas area high schools will perform a jazz concert Saturday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m. in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center inside the Houston Harte University Center at 1910 Rosemont Drive on the Angelo State University campus.

The 20 musicians from Classes A-AAA make up the Region 6 Honor Jazz Band under the auspices of the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Frank Nelson, band director at Belton High School, will direct the Region 6 band in five numbers. The elite group includes five saxophonists, five trumpeters, five trombonists and a rhythm section composed of drummers, guitar, bass guitar and a pianist.

The evening will also feature the ASU Jazz Ensemble, led by Dr. Tim Bonenfant, assistant professor of music, and the West Texas Jazz Orchestra, a group of professional musicians led by Jim Bode, band director at Irion County High School in Mertzon. The concert is open free to the public.

Also featured will be Ron Wilkins, a professional trombonist from San Antonio. After the separate groups’ sets, the musicians will come together for a combined concert.

The event, in its fourth year, is hosted by the ASU Department of Art and Music and coordinated by Jesse Randle, band director at Reagan County High School in Big Lake.
