ASU Multicultural Center to Host Movie Series

February 09, 2010

Angelo State University’s Multicultural Center continues its Multicultural Movie Series during the spring semester with three movies scheduled in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Each movie is a 30-minute documentary that highlights a different cultural theme and will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion. Show times are at 6 p.m. Feb. 18, March 25 and April 8 in Room 110/111 of the University Center. Refreshments will be served and all the events are open free to the public.

“Prejudice: More Than Black and White” will be shown on Feb. 18. It examines how Muslims, African-Americans, the disabled, homosexuals, immigrants and other minority groups have been subject to prejudice, intolerance and violence – and what steps individuals and societies can take to avoid those circumstances.

“Women’s Rights” will be shown on March 25. Part of the Films Media Group’s Global Issues series, it examines how women in many countries are still fighting to attain the most basic civil liberties. It also contextualizes that struggle by comparing women’s rights in the U.S. with the status of women in China, Afghanistan and Kenya.

“When I Knew” will be shown on April 8. It features the stories of 16 people describing how and when they knew they were gay. An HBO production, it is described as “illuminating and moving” by the Films Media Group – Films for Humanities and Sciences Web site.
