Open House for Angelo State Natural History Collections

February 16, 2010

Thousands of plant and animal specimens will be on public display when the Angelo State Natural History Collections (ASNHC) hosts an open house Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the Cavness Science Building, 2460 Dena Drive.

The open house will begin at 7 p.m. and is open free to the public. Activities will include a presentation by ASU biology professor Dr. Kelly McCoy, student-led tours of the Natural History Collections and an opportunity for attendees to test their knowledge with a quiz on the flora and fauna of West Texas. Light refreshments will be served and families are encouraged to attend.

The ASNHC currently includes more than 100,000 specimens of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and plants from Texas, many other states, Mexico, Africa, Asia, Australia and even the Galápagos Islands. The collections aid student and faculty research projects, are used as teaching tools, and are viewed by thousands of K-12 students every year through special programs like ASU Science Days.

McCoy is head of the ASU Biology Department. His presentation, titled “You Can Learn a Lot From a Lizard, if You Ask the Right Questions,” will kick off the evening’s activities at 7 p.m. in Room 100 of the Cavness Building.
