ASU Chorales to Present Handel’s ‘Messiah’

November 16, 2010

Angelo State University’s Concert Chorale and Community Chorale will join a professional chamber orchestra in presenting George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” during ASU’s annual Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the San Angelo Convention Center, 500 Rio Concho Drive.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is open free to the public. The Concert Chorale and Community Chorale are both directed by Dr. Pamela Lee, ASU professor of music.

Handel’s “Messiah,” a Baroque oratorio, continues to inspire audiences with voice and music after more than 250 years. ASU music professors Dr. Scott Raines, a baritone singer, and Dr. John Irish, a trumpeter, will perform “The Trumpet Shall Sound.”

The two-part concert will continue after a brief intermission with seasonal favorites, including “What Sweeter Music” by John Rutter, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” arranged by Mack Wilberg, and “We Gather Together,” arranged by Stephen Paulus.

The Lee Middle School Concert Choir, under the direction of ASU alumna Patti Wetzel, will join the university singers for Roy Ringwald’s stirring version of “O Holy Night” for combined children’s and mixed choirs. Two rhythmic spirituals, “Great Day” and “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jerico,” are also on the program.
