ASU Debuts Mayer Field

February 03, 2014

Richard and Betty Mayer were recognized during an Angelo State University ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday to officially debut Mayer Field at the ASU Softball Complex and its new artificial turf.

“By their generous support of our athletic program,” said ASU President Brian J. May, “Richard and Betty Mayer continue the longstanding Mayer family tradition of philanthropy benefitting Angelo State University.  Their gift will not only  provide artificial turf for a perennial collegiate softball powerhouse in the Angelo State University Rambelles but will also serve the community by eliminating the need for irrigation and helping conserve more of  San Angelo’s crucial water supply.”

University officials as well as Mickey Long, chairman of the Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System and John D. Steinmetz, member of the Board of Regents of Texas Tech University System participated in the formal opening of the new $600,000 field turf project, which was made possible by the Mayer family.

“Richard and Betty Mayer are good friends and long-time supporters of Angelo State,” Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance said. “Thanks to their contribution, one of the top-notch softball teams in the country will now play on a top-notch field.”

Hellas Construction completed the field turf project in November of 2013. The field features the Angelo State logo in center and in the batter boxes. The batting cages and warm-up bullpens were also resurfaced with artificial turf.

“This is another critical step in our plan to provide the best facilities for our student-athletes,” said ASU Director of Athletics Sean Johnson, “The Mayer family has been faithful supporters of ASU Athletics for decades and is one of the reasons for our success.”

ASU’s Rambelle Softball team won the 2004 NCAA Division II national championship, has made four NCAA Division II World Series appearances and has earned six Lone Star Conference titles since 2004.

“We are extremely thankful for what the Mayer family has done for our program,” head softball coach Travis Scott said. “The field looks amazing and we look forward to seeing Richard, Betty, John and family at our games.  It’s nice to have friends like the Mayer’s that support Angelo State University.”

The ASU Softball Complex is the second field on campus to receive artificial turf.  Earlier this year, field turf was installed on 1st Community Credit Union Field at the LeGrand Sports Complex.

The first home game to be played on Mayer Field will be on Saturday, February 22 against UT-Permian Basin.
