ASU Schedules International Education Week Activities

Angelo State University’s Center for International Studies (CIS), Multicultural Center, Center for Security Studies, Center for Student Involvement and other partners are sponsoring a variety of activities to celebrate International Education Week Nov. 15-19 at various locations on the ASU campus.

Several of the week’s activities are open to the public, including the kickoff event at 11:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in the Houston Harte University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. ASU President Joseph C. Rallo and Dr. Sharynn Tomlin, CIS director, will host the event that will include naming the winners of the 2010 Study Abroad Photo Contest. The photos were taken by ASU students during their summer study abroad experiences and will be on display.

Following the kickoff ceremony will be a Parade of Nations featuring ASU international students walking from the University Center on the west side of campus down the University Mall to the Food Service Center on the east side of campus carrying the flags of their home countries.

Public activities for Tuesday, Nov. 16, will include the Conversation Partners program hosted by ASU’s English Language Learners’ Institute from 1-2 p.m. in Room 119 of the Math-Computer Science Building, 2200 Dena Drive. The public is invited to converse with ASU students learning English as a second language. There will also be a free Tai Chi demonstration at 1:30 p.m. in the Davidson Conference Center.

Wednesday public activities will include the ASU French Club hosting breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. in the Food Service Center, 2201 Vanderventer St. Cost for the breakfast is $4.25 per person. That afternoon, the Conversation Partners program will run from noon-1 p.m. followed by the ASU Honors Program presentation “Nursing in Africa.” Nursing student Julianne Johnson will talk about her experiences during a summer internship with Open Arms International at a clinic in Kenya. The free program will run from 3-4 p.m. in the Honors Lounge on the third floor of the ASU Porter Henderson Library.

The busiest day of activities will be Thursday as the ASU College of Business, Small Business Development Center and CIS host the 12th annual International Business Symposium from 9:30-11 a.m. in the Davidson Conference Center. Dr. Masaaki Kotabe, holder of the Washburn Chair in International Business and Marketing at Temple University, will be the keynote speaker as he addresses the causes and effects of outsourcing. The symposium is open free to the public.

The ASU Multicultural Center will host two activities on Thursday. Its Native American Celebration, complete with traditional food and entertainment, will run from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the central spine of the University Center. It will then host the latest installment of the Multicultural Center Movie Series, “Native American Religions,” at 6 p.m. in Room 110/111 of the University Center. Both events are open free to the public.

Also on Thursday, the ASU Newman Center, CIS and Circle K chapter will host the Hunger Luncheon from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Newman Center, 2451 Dena Drive. Dr. Loree Branham, ASU assistant professor of animal science, will present “Hunger: A Global Problem with Local Solutions” and lunch will be served. Attendees are asked to donate $5 for the Catholic Relief Fund.

Thursday’s activities will by highlighted by a speaker program presented by the ASU Center for Security Studies. Michael D. Phillips, who served as military assistant to the U.S. ambassador to the Balkans during the armed conflict between Serbs and Kosovars in the early 1990s, will present “Kosovo: A Perspective from the Ground” at 5 p.m. in the Davidson Conference Center. His presentation is open free to the public.

The week of activities will culminate on Friday, Nov. 19, as the ASU International Students Association hosts its annual Banquet and Talent Show at 6 p.m. in the Davidson Conference Center. Activities will include a dinner, featuring foods from around the world, and the student talent show. The event is open free to the public, but seating is limited. Additionally, there will be several events exclusively for ASU students, faculty and staff, including an international faculty luncheon, a Foreign Service careers and internships presentation, a foreign film night, and Zumba and Latin dance classes. The Food Service Center will also be serving international cuisine for dinner each evening.
