This person will work alongside and report to the Assistant Director for Outdoor Adventures, Ian Brown. Mr. Brown is also currently the President of the Board of Directors for the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE). So while the focus will initially be local, the graduate assistant will also be exposed to a network of colleagues across the nation.

Taking notes from the experiential playbook, this position will start off by developing a Full Value Commitment with the Assistant Director to assess expectations and goals for the assistantship experience. From there, the GA learns the ins and outs of the host program and its philosophies and methodologies for facilitating quality experiences to its participants. Over time, leadership and responsibilities are transferred to the GA for an ever-lasting experience that prepares him/her for a career in the recreation industry.

Though it is preferred that the applicant has a background in outdoor education/recreation, it is not necessary to apply. Many UREC graduate assistants study in the Master of Education in Coaching, Sport, Recreation, and Fitness degree plan. Candidates may consider any graduate degree program, but must be accepted into graduate school before beginning employment.

Outdoor Adventures hosts six program areas:

  • Indoor Rock Climbing Gym
  • Outdoor Trips
  • Educational Clinics
  • ASU Lake House Facility
  • Equipment Rental
  • Team Building Experiences
