ASU Football Coming Home to Campus

March 27, 2014

The Texas Tech University System Board of Regents has approved changing the name of the LeGrand Sports Complex to the LeGrand Stadium and Sports Complex after a $1.4 million dollar donation to provide lights and bleachers by Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand.

“Bob and Jean Ann LeGrand have long supported all aspects of Angelo State University, ranging from academics to alumni to athletics,” said ASU President Brian J. May, ” Whenever there has been a need, the LeGrand’s have always stepped up to assist.

Thanks to their ongoing generosity, we now will be able to bring our football games home to campus this fall for the first time in history. The LeGrand Stadium and Sports Complex will provide a fine facility that will serve both our student athletes and our fans for many years to come.”

The gift is one of many by the LeGrand’s over the years as the family has given over $4.2 million to Angelo State University for academic scholarships. Robert and Jean Ann established the first university endowment solely for ASU athletics and provided funds for the LeGrand Alumni Center.

“The LeGrand family are good friends and long-time supporters of Angelo State,” Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance said. “Thanks to their generosity, the Angelo State community will now be able to cheer on the Ram football team on campus.

Their gifts to Angelo State continue to unite our alumni and fans, and we are so grateful for their support.”

The $1.4 million dollar project will add bleachers to the east side and new stadium lights with construction to be completed prior to the start of the 2014 football season. The LeGrand Stadium and Sports Complex will now be the host for all future ASU football games starting in 2014. It will be the first time ever the Ram football team has played on the Angelo State campus.

“Like everything Bob and Jean Ann have done for ASU, this gift will have a lasting legacy on our student-athletes, our alumni, our campus community and the fans that support our student-athletes,” ASU Athletic Director Sean Johnson said. “The best thing about this gift is how it directly affects our current student-athletes as well as all of the future ASU student-athletes to come.”

In addition to the gift by the LeGrand’s, Texas Bank had donated $50,000 towards a scoreboard that will be in the north end zone.

“Both our academic and athletic programs have excelled in quality thanks to the continued generosity of Bob and Jean Ann LeGrand,” said ASU Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations Jamie Akin. “Through their passion for education and the San Angelo community they have left a legacy at Angelo State that students and alumni will benefit from for many years to come.”

The project all started in June of 2013 when 1st Community Federal Credit Union, the San Angelo Health Foundation, Larry Clark and an anonymous donor provided funds to convert the infield grass surface to field turf. The field was named 1st Community Credit Union Field and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in October.

“This is an incredible day not only for ASU football, but our entire campus community,” Johnson said. “To be able to permanently bring Ram football to campus will help create the kind of school spirit among our student body that will only elevate the goals and mission of the entire university.”

“We are honored that our donors came together to help us reach the next level of competitive excellence by having our first ever game stadium on campus,” Akin said.

The first home game will be held on Saturday, September 13 against Western State.

“We are excited about the opportunity to move all our games on campus,” ASU head football coach Will Wagner. “The ownership and pride our student-athletes as well as the university and community will help every aspect of our program.”
