ASU Student Government to Kick Off ‘True Blue’ Campaign

November 11, 2010

Austin Osmanski and Hector Romo want to start a colorful habit in San Angelo.

The president and vice president of the Angelo State University Student Government Association want ASU students and employees and San Angelo citizens to wear “True Blue” every Friday. Of course, they mean True Blue as in ASU blue.

The concept of True Blue is simple. Everyone in the community wears a blue shirt on Fridays.

“The objective is to create a tangible sense of spirit for Angelo State University students and programs,” Osmanski said. “The greater goal is that the habit of wearing blue becomes a community tradition that continues long beyond the current student body’s tenure on campus.”

ASU students will launch True Blue with events leading up to the Rams and ’Belles basketball games on Saturday, Jan. 22. The first event is from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, with “Spirit Friday,” sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement, at the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Students will enjoy lunch, mix and mingle with student-athletes, and stomp to the beat of ASU’s band and drumline.

On Saturday, Jan. 22, students and fans from the community are invited to meet student athletes from the ASU Rams and Rambelles basketball, baseball and softball teams and other surprise guests from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sunset Mall, 4001 Sunset Drive. Student athletes will sign team photos and participate in various activities.

True Blue events will continue on campus as ASU students join in the True Blue “Pre-Game Prep” from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in the University Center. ASU students will paint signs for that evening’s ASU basketball games and then may proceed to Texan Hall, 2104 S. Van Buren, where they can paint themselves and their friends True Blue.

Ram Jam, hosted by the ASU Alumni Association, will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the ASU LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave., with more pre-game food, fun and music for ASU students and alumni, the community and families.

The ’Belles basketball team tips off against West Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St., followed by the Rams game at 7:30 p.m. against West Texas A&M. ASU students will compete for True Blue shirts to wear as they sit with the Blue Crew, a group of “dyed-in-the-wool” ASU student fans. The “Most Spirited Fan” camera will be panning the crowd for winners. ASU mascots Bella and Roscoe will make appearances throughout the True Blue kickoff events.

The following offices have also assisted with organization and resources for the campaign kickoff: Athletics, Center for Student Involvement, University Center Program Council, Development, Community Relations and Residential Programs.
