ASU Hosting FFA, 4-H Contest

March 31, 2014

More than 1,800 FFA and 4-H members from about 130 schools throughout Texas will gather at Angelo State University’s Management, Instruction and Research (MIR) Center on Friday, April 4, for the annual ASU Invitational Judging Contest.

Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and judging contests will begin at 8:30 a.m.  Contestants will do competitive judging in various categories, including livestock, horse, wool, meats, wildlife, cotton, milk quality and products, entomology, land, poultry, range, farm business management and homesite evaluation.  All contests will take place at the MIR Center except for the horse and livestock categories, which will take place at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena at the San Angelo Fairgrounds.  An awards ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at the MIR Center with the high-scoring individuals in each category winning scholarships.

The MIR Center, commonly called the ASU Ranch, is located just north of San Angelo off U.S. Hwy 87 and Grape Creek Road.  The ASU Invitational Judging Contest is classified as a FFA Career Development Event (CDE).

According to the FFA website, “Since 1928, FFA has worked to create events that demonstrate the meaningful connections between classroom instruction and real-life scenarios. CDEs build on what is learned in agricultural classes and the FFA.  The events are designed to help prepare students for careers in agriculture.”

Additional details on the ASU contest are available online at www.judgingcard.com/Registration/getFile.ashx?ID=2709.  For more information, call Dr. Will Dickison in the ASU Agriculture Department at 325-942-2027.
