ASU ‘True Blue’ Events Scheduled This Weekend

February 22, 2011

Angelo State University’s Student Government Association is hosting another series of activities this weekend as it continues its “True Blue” campaign to have San Angelo citizens and ASU faculty, staff and students wear ASU blue on Fridays and at ASU events.

Activities will kick off with “Spirit Friday” from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, in the spine of the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

“Spirit Friday is really a ‘day before’ pep rally,” said Heather Valle, ASU coordinator for student organizations. “Students will enjoy lunch, mix and mingle, cheer and stomp to the beat of ASU’s pep band.”

True Blue events will continue Saturday, Feb. 26, as the undefeated ASU Rambelles softball team takes on St. Edward’s University in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the ASU Softball Complex. The first 50 ASU students to show valid student IDs at the gate will receive free True Blue shirts.

Saturday evening, the ASU ’Belles basketball team will play its last regular season game against Tarleton State University at 5:30 p.m. in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St. The Rams will then take on Tarleton State at 7:30 p.m. in their regular season finale.

The first 200 ASU students to show up for the basketball games with valid ASU IDs will receive free True Blue shirts to wear as they sit with the Blue Crew, a group of “dyed-in-the-wool” ASU student fans. The Most Spirited Fan Cam will be panning the crowd for winners.

Halftime of the ‘Belles basketball game will feature a “Stepping!” dance performance by the ASU African Students Association. At halftime of the Rams game, “I am ASU” video contest winner Taj Parker and Ryan Hubert will perform a rap version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The True Blue campaign receives support from the ASU Athletics Department, Center for Student Involvement, University Center Program Council, Development Office, Community Relations Office and Residential Programs as well as the ASU Alumni Association.
