San Angelo Mayor Named ASU Wells Fargo Business Lecturer

February 24, 2010

Alvin New, San Angelo mayor and former president and CEO of Town & Country Food Stores, will deliver Angelo State University’s 2010 Wells Fargo Distinguished Lectureship in Business on Tuesday, March 23, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

New will present his lecture, “‘Lemonade out of Lemons’ and Other Anecdotes of Service and Success,” at 11 a.m. on March 23 in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center. The lecture is open free to the public.

A 1984 ASU graduate in management, New went to work for Town & Country Food Stores as a store clerk that same year. After subsequent promotions to assistant store manager, store manager and district manager, he moved into the marketing department where he oversaw the company’s food service operations and introduced the Country Kitchen, Subway, Godfather’s Pizza and Taco Bell restaurants into various store locations.

Further promotions saw New become vice president of marketing, executive vice president of operations and ultimately president and CEO, a position he held until the sale of Town & Country to Susser Holdings Corp. in November of 2007.

During his tenure at Town & Country, New also made regular management presentations to students in the ASU College of Business. Both he and his wife, Patricia, Class of 1986 and 1993, are former ASU Carr Scholars. They recently donated $600,000 to fund scholarships and program enhancements for the ASU Honors Program along with renovations and technology enhancements for classrooms in the ASU College of Business and College of Education.

New has also been active in the San Angelo community, serving on the boards of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Wells Fargo Community Bank, Boys and Girls Club and the ASU Foundation. He is a past member of the National Association of Convenience Stores executive committee and the Texas Restaurant Association.

Following his election in December of 2009, New began his tenure as mayor of San Angelo in January. He and Patricia have two daughters, 13-year-old Victoria and 11-year-old Elizabeth.

The Distinguished Lectureship in Business was established in 1995 and is underwritten each year by Wells Fargo Bank of San Angelo. Now in its 15th year, the lectureship is designed to provide ASU students and the public with exposure to well-known business leaders and help grow the relationship between the San Angelo business community and ASU.

Past speakers have included Verizon vice president Michael H. Millegan, Time Warner Cable CFO Landel Hobbs, Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr., Hirschfeld Steel CEO David Hirschfeld and Nike Inc. executive Kevin Carroll.

A selection committee representing ASU and Wells Fargo Bank chooses the speaker annually. Members of the 2010 selection committee are chairman Dr. Corbett Gaulden, dean of ASU’s College of Business; Jim Raymond, president of Wells Fargo Bank of San Angelo; Dr. Tom Badgett, head of ASU’s Department of Management and Marketing; Dr. Thomas Bankston, head of ASU’s Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance; Dr. S. Murat Kara, associate professor of economics; Tom Nurre Jr., ASU news and information specialist; and Dr. Sharynn Tomlin, professor of management.
