ASU Students to Spend Spring Break as Volunteers in New Orleans
March 05, 2010
ASU students participating in CSI’s Project Spring Break are Kaci Childers, Desiree Garcia, Claudia Garcia, Roger Quintana, Chijioke Onyekwelu and Raoul Kabona.
The students, selected through an application process by the CSI, will leave March 14 and spend the following week working on projects in New Orleans as part of the CSI’s Project Spring Break program.
The trip is being funded by the CSI and the Office of Student Life, including registration costs, accommodations for five nights, transportation to and from New Orleans, meals and T-shirts.
Volunteers will stay in a communal living facility and will share clean-up, cooking and kitchen patrol duties. They will also participate in “community meetings” during dinner when they will share experiences and hear about other projects going on in the city.
Project Spring Break offers ASU students a service opportunity as a substitute to conventional spring break activities. HandsOn New Orleans works in partnership with community-based agencies to provide volunteers with a variety of meaningful opportunities for service and leadership, according to Jennifer Johnson, ASU Greek Life and Community Service coordinator.
Johnson and Heather Valle, coordinator for student organizations, will accompany the ASU students.
