ASU Education Prof Honored

Dr. Christine Purkiss, a faculty member of the Department of Teacher Education at Angelo State University, has been honored with the 2014 Chapter Counselor Award for the West Region by Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) international society for education.

An associate professor with a doctorate in education from Texas Tech University, Purkiss specializes in science education. She has been the counselor for the Mu Gamma Chapter of KDP at ASU since 2012 and was co-counselor for the three previous years. 

The honor, announced June 30, was part of the organization’s annual Awards for Education Excellence. The Regional Chapter Counselor Award recognizes counselors in each region who provide exceptional guidance and mentorship to chapter members. The regions are West, Midwest, Southeast, Northeast and Community Colleges. 

KDP was founded in 1911 at the University of Illinois to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. The national organization is composed of more than 600 chapters and total international membership is more than 40,000. The Mu Gamma Chapter at ASU has been in existence since 1969.
