ASU Intramural Squad Wins National Championship

Angelo State University co-recreational intramural flag football squad IM Legends won the American Collegiate Intramural Sports (ACIS) National Championships in late December while another ASU team reached the finals of the National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) tournament earlier this month.

IM Legends’ ACIS national title came at the University of New Orleans. The ASU squad dominated its competition en route to the title by defeating a team from Georgia Southern, 32-0, and then overpowering a University of Kentucky squad, 61-0. It won the championship game over a Florida Gulf Coast University team, 52-16.

Additionally, IM Legends brought home team and individual honors indicative of its national title. The team was awarded the James L. “Jet” Smith Memorial Scholarship Award for the Co-Rec Division. Individuals receiving honors were Reid Jackson, male MVP on offense, Dannielle Watts, female MVP on offense, Trevor Brunet, male MVP on defense, Jodi Jackson, female MVP on defense, and Alysha Currie and Jerrell Jones, all-tournament selections. Two ASU student officials, Josh Boynton and Tyler Gueldner, received All-American honors at the tournament.

Another ASU co-rec intramurals team, New Era, fell in the championship game of the NCCS National Flag Football Tournament held Jan. 3-6 at Texas A&M University. The ASU squad lost, 30-16, to a University of Central Florida team after winning a semifinal game over a Texas Southern University squad, 23-20. New Era squad members named to the all-tournament team were Lauren Wilde, Art Arteaga and Kris Crocket.

Also participating in the tournament were IM Legends in the Co-Rec Division along with men’s teams New Era and Wolfpac. New Era defeated a University of Southern Mississippi team, 14-6, and fell to a California State University-Northridge squad, 18-7. IM Legends defeated a University of Houston squad, 36-21, and then fell to a University of North Carolina-Charlotte team, 29-19. Wolfpac defeated a University of Central Florida team, 18-14, and an Olivet College squad, 40-0, before losing to the University of Central Florida team, 44-12.
