Angelo State Certified as ‘StormReady’
May 06, 2010
Hector Guerrero, warning and coordination meteorologist at the San Angelo NWS office, will present the campus certification to Joe Muñoz, ASU senior executive assistant to the president, in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, in the Nasworthy Suite (Room 203/204) of the Houston Harte University Center. The ceremony is open free to the public and light refreshments will be served.
StormReady certifications are awarded to cities, counties, universities, government sites and commercial sites that meet a specific set of NWS guidelines. To be certified, a community must:
- Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center;
- Have more than one system to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings, and more than one method to alert the community;
- Create a system that monitors local weather conditions;
- Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars;
- Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and conducting emergency exercises.
Out of the 1,602 StormReady communities in the U.S., only 56 university and college campuses are included. ASU now joins Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University and Midwestern State University as the only institutions in Texas certified StormReady.
