Cadet Awarded Scholarship
October 16, 2014
Angelo State University Air Force ROTC Cadet Laura Acevedo, a freshman who graduated in May from San Angelo’s Lake View High School, is the most recent recipient of the R.F. Durso ROTC Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded only to full-time ASU students who are cadets in ASU’s ROTC Detachment 847. Preference is given to graduates of Lake View High who were members of the school’s Junior ROTC program for at least two years. Acevedo was a four-year member of Lake View’s JROTC and served as Corps Commander and as special assistant to the senior aerospace science instructor. She graduated as salutatorian for her class with a grade-point average of 102.23 and is majoring in accounting at ASU.
“I am extremely grateful to even have the opportunity to attend college,” Acevedo said. “I am just happy to be able to combine my desire to learn with my desire to join the military.”
The scholarship is for $2,500, divided into equal amounts for the fall and spring semester, and is renewable for up to four years or $10,000. It was established in 2005 from the estate of Rocco F. Durso, a veteran of World War II.
“We have many talented students at Lake View High School and this scholarship gives us the opportunity to attract the best and the brightest to our program,” said Lt. Col. Pedro Matos, commander of Detachment 847.
