Director of Athletic Communications Named at Angelo State

July 07, 2010

Kevin McCarty, who has worked in athletic media relations at four colleges, has been named Angelo State University’s first director of athletic communications, effective July 12.

As director of athletic communications, McCarty will oversee the publicity and promotion of 13 ASU sports, supervise the official athletic website AngeloSports.com, and direct the department’s marketing and social media initiatives.

His appointment was announced jointly by ASU Athletics Director Kathleen Brasfield and Preston Lewis, director of communications and marketing for the university. The new position supplants the previous position of sports information director.

“One of the strategic goals for the College Sports Information Directors of America,” said Brasfield, “is to expand beyond the traditional role of the sports information director as a statistician, game manager and media contact to a broader marketing role. Kevin McCarty will help Angelo State make that transition to a marketing concept in line with both CoSIDA’s and our vision for the future.”

Lewis said McCarty’s goal will be to extend the outreach of ASU athletics beyond the local media to state and, where appropriate, national media and to engage the community in strengthening the support of Rams and Rambelles athletics.

McCarty comes to ASU from Illinois State University, where he earned a master’s degree in kinesiology and recreation with a concentration in sport management. While at Illinois State, McCarty served as the media contact for the Redbirds baseball team and secondary contact for the Redbirds football team. He was co-editor of the football and basketball game day programs.

McCarty earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Kansas State University, where he spent time working as the media contact for the men’s golf team and women’s tennis team as a student assistant. Additionally, McCarty served as a student assistant at Oklahoma State University and Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He also spent three summers working with Athletes in Action’s Texas Collegiate League team in Mineral Wells, Texas.

McCarty and his wife, Brooksie, will reside in San Angelo.
