ASU Music Professor to Perform Recital

October 28, 2011

Dr. Jeff Womack, Angelo State University assistant professor of music, will present a bassoon recital on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall, and is open free to the public.

The program will feature works by Wilson Osborne, Gustav Schreck, Burrell Phillips, Mathieu Lussier and Roger Boutry. Womack will be joined by Dr. Constance Kelley, ASU flute professor, and Dr. Leslie Spotz, professor of piano at Tarleton State University. The Lussier piece features flute, bassoon and piano in a trio, while the Boutry piece, “Inteférences,” for bassoon and piano is one of the most challenging works in the bassoon repertoire.

Womack, who specializes in double reeds and music history, maintains an active performance schedule as bassoonist in the Mesquite Trio, principal bassoon for the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra and substitute bassoon with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra. He previously served as second bassoon with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra in North Dakota, where he also filled the principal oboe chair as well as solo English horn.

Womack has presented masterclasses at the Cork Institute of Music in Cork, Ireland, Kansas State University, University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee. In addition, he has performed at conferences of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) in 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, and most recently at the 2010 IDRS Conference in Norman, Okla., where his composition “Rustic Celebration” for woodwind trio premiered.
