Spring Graduation Events

More than 850 students are scheduled to graduate during Angelo State University’s spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 16, in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St.

Graduates of the College of Education and College of Health and Human Services will walk the stage during a 10 a.m. ceremony. Graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business will walk the stage in a 2 p.m. ceremony. All of ASU’s commencement activities are open free to the public, and the two ceremonies may also be viewed live on the ASU website at www.angelo.edu/commencement/spring2015.php

During ASU’s commencement, 18 doctoral degrees, 217 master’s degrees and 635 bachelor’s degrees are scheduled to be presented. Graduate students will earn 18 doctor of physical therapy, 27 master of arts, seven master of professional accountancy, six master of business administration, 90 master of education, 44 master of science, 16 master of science in nursing, and nine master of security studies degrees. 

Undergraduates will receive 115 bachelor of arts, 77 bachelor of business administration, one bachelor of cultural competence and security studies, four bachelor of fine arts, four bachelor of intelligence, security studies and analysis, 29 bachelor of interdisciplinary studies, three bachelor of music, 303 bachelor of science, 53 bachelor of science in nursing, 17 bachelor of security studies, and 29 bachelor of social work degrees. 

Kristy Melton Kristy Melton The commencement speaker will be ASU alumna Kristy Melton, senior winemaker at the Clos Du Val Winery in California’s Napa Valley. A 2003 ASU graduate, Melton initially started a medical research career at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., before trading her beakers for wine barrels. She was promoted to senior winemaker at Clos Du Val in 2013 after becoming the winery’s first female winemaker in 2010. She has been named one of the “Top 40 under 40 Tastemakers” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and one of the “Top 30 under 40 Winemakers in the World” by The Drinks Business magazine. 

The commencement ceremonies will highlight two days of graduation-related events on the ASU campus. On Friday, May 15, ASU’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 will conduct its Spring Commissioning Ceremony for eight graduating cadets at 9 a.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Each cadet will receive an appointment as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. 

At 1 p.m. on Friday, the College of Education will host a reception for its graduates in the central spine of the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive. At 5:30 p.m., the physical therapy program will conduct its annual Awards Banquet at the Stephens Library downtown. Various student awards, including those for Academic Excellence, Research Excellence and Clinical Excellence, will be distributed, as well as several faculty awards.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, the social work program will conduct the annual Pinning Ceremony for its graduates at 6 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center. At 6:30 p.m., the nursing program will conduct its annual Pinning Ceremony in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Pinning ceremonies became a U.S. tradition in the early 1800s to mark students’ completion of their education and entry into the profession. 

Then on Saturday, the ASU Alumni Association will host a come-and-go celebration for all graduates, alumni, and their families and friends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave. There will be complementary refreshments and door prizes, as well as discounted ASU merchandise. 

The ASU College of Business will also host a reception for its graduates starting at 2 p.m. Saturday in the VIP Lounge of the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. There will be refreshments, door prizes and photo opportunities available.
