Visual and Performing Arts Chair Named

Christopher Dean Stewart, professor of art and chair of the Art Department at Tyler Junior College, has been named chair of Angelo State University’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts, effective July 1.

Christopher Stewart Christopher Stewart An artist and printmaker, Stewart has been a member of the faculty at Tyler Junior College (TJC) since 1994. In 2007, he earned TJC’s Endowed Chair of Teaching Excellence Award, and he was the 2012-13 recipient of TJC’s Mattie Alice Scroggins Baker Award for Teaching Excellence. Prior to his time at TJC, Stewart worked for Bauder Fashion College in Arlington from 1989-1994, serving as an art instructor and the director of education. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from Texas Tech University and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking and drawing from the University of Nebraska.

His artwork has been displayed in numerous galleries and other venues in Texas, as well as in California, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, New York and in Germany and Poland. In 2014, Stewart’s work was selected for “Shy Rabbit Print International 5,” a juried exhibition in Pagosa Springs, Colo., and for “Truth in Black and White,” an invitational printmaking exhibition at the University of Texas at Tyler. In addition to teaching and working on his art, Stewart has led several summer study abroad trips to Florence, Italy, for TJC students.
