Unique Europe - Netherlands, Romania and Austria
The Social Work Program is offering a study abroad opportunity during Summer I of June 2018 in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Bucharest, Romania; and Vienna, Austria. There will an opportunity to visit the University of Amsterdam (UA) and the University of Bucharest (UB) and meet both Social Work Faculty and Students. Those attending the study abroad program will be able to meet students from the UA/UB and tour the campus. Two Professors from the UA will meet with the students and provide lectures on Dutch Social Welfare Services, provide a guided tour of the Red Light District and meet with the Department of Prostitution. Five of the Professors form the UB will meet with the students and provide a lecture on social work from a Romanian perspective. The lectures will include, but not limited to: poverty, family planning, healthcare, and high risk populations. There will be an opportunity to visit at least two, possible three, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and interact with social workers in those agencies.
Along with the educational component of the study abroad program, there will be an opportunity to visit many historical and cultural sites in Amsterdam, Bucharest and Vienna included, but not limited to: the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Canal tours, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the National Military Museum, Cismigiu Park (like Central Park in New York), various art and natural history museums. We will also visit the People’s Parliament Building, which is the second largest building in the world, only to the Pentagon. There will take a trip to the city of Brosov and while there, we will visit Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle).
This course will highlight the difference and similarity of social welfare services between and culture and diversity between Europe and the United States. Topics will include child welfare services, policy to address poverty, delivery of health care services and family planning options. The course will be highlighted by the presentation of workshops by social work faculty from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Bucharest. There will also be guided tours of NGOs that provide social welfare services to individuals and a visit and tour of the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

SWK 4381 -European Culture and Diversity
The International Study Program will be conducted during Summer I of 2018 and will provide approximately 20 students (undergraduate) a unique opportunity to study European Social Welfare system and European culture and Diversity from its past to current state. The program will include faculty from the University of Bucharest, Romania and the University of Amsterdam. This could help to develop and create a partnership between the Universities.
Students will be extensively briefed prior to departure regarding travel arrangements and schedules with addresses and telephone numbers given each participant. All travel arrangements will be made by the program directors and approved by the University. All program participants must have adequate health and accident insurance coverage in case of medical care or emergencies.
The basic cost of the program will be about $5,000.00 which will cover round-trip airfare, travel within Europe, educational local trips, health insurance and visits to historic sites, accommodations in Europe, hotel transfers, daily full European breakfast, and program dinners. Students selected for the program will be eligible for financial support that will be used to defray program costs. Discretional transportation for personal reasons in the program cities and extra meal expenses will be the responsibility of the student.
