Adria Battaglia

Communication, Mass Media, and Theatry

Angelo State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Adria Battaglia to the College of Arts and Sciences. She will begin her duties as Assistant Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication, Mass Media and Theatre in Fall 2011.

Adria’s research interests focus on the intersections of rhetoric and social movements, ideology critique and public sphere theory. The title of her dissertation is “The Rhetoric of <Free Speech>: Regulating Dissent Since 9/11.”  Her current research emphasizes methods of social change and the rhetorical strategies diverse groups use to open up spaces in order to receive recognition and/or redistribution of resources.

Adria regularly presents research related to rhetorical theory at national and regional conferences, and recently co-published an article on scholarly activism in a forum for Quarterly Journal of Speech. One chapter from her dissertation, focusing on the Danish cartoons controversy, appeared in the 2008-2009 edition of the Free Speech Yearbook, a publication of the National Communication Association.

Adria received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2010.
