First Generation College Students
Many students come to us from families that have never had a student go to college.We have put this "tutorial" together to aid families getting their students into college.
Please go to this website before May 1st of your graduating year.This is the website through which you will apply for Federal Financial Aid.Even if you think you won't qualify, you should go through here because there are some assistance programs which require you to be turned down for Federal Financial Aid before you qualify for other programs.
Scholarships:
Deadline 15 March of your senior year.Given to deserving students from a private endowment given by the wonderful Carr Family. This scholarship is merit based and incurs NO commitment to the USAF.
Priority deadline 1 Feb of your senior year, but applications are accepted until money runs out!
Deadline 1 December of your senior year.The AFROTC Scholarship is based on merit and is awarded by headquarters AFROTC. This scholarship incurs a commitment to the Air Force upon graduation. You will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force.
These three scholarships are easy to confuse!
Applying to the university: One application (the Texas Common Application) is all that is needed to apply to the University.
However, if you are interested in the nursing program, you should contact them directly. There may be additional requirements to be accepted into this exciting program.
You cannot apply for TOO MANY scholarships.There was a recent story of a student who spent his entire junior/senior summer applying for scholarships.He applied for 1,000 scholarships and was turned down for 970 scholarships. He "only" got 30 scholarships worth $38,000! Start searching for all sorts of scholarships!
