Letter from the Department Chair

imageWelcome to the newly formed Department of Visual and Performing Arts, which combines the areas of Theatre, Music and Art. We are excited at the prospect of joining the creative and academic energies of these areas into a unified department. With this new department, we continue to offer arts experiences in a traditional manner, while exploring the possibilities that a multi-discipline department offers.

In the department, students are provided opportunities to study and learn about their chosen art discipline. In addition to academic studies, students are provided possibilities to create and interact in a myriad of arts settings and performances.

As you view the faculty profiles, you will find a faculty that has a wealth of professional experience in their specialized areas coupled with the depth of supporting academic degrees.  Many of our faculty have earned doctorates or terminal degrees in their respective areas, adding to the richness of a strong arts experience.

Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, Texas, a city with a budding and thriving arts thrust. Students have the ability to collaborate with the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the Chicken Farm Art Center, the San Angelo Civic Theatre (the oldest established civic theater in Texas), the Cactus Jazz Series, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Chamber Music Series, a civic ballet company, a community band, and a host of entertainment venues that feature local bands.

With strong academic studies, varied creative experiences and excellent faculty, the main thrust of the department is the creative and intellectual development of our students. Many of our former students maintain successful careers in the classroom as teachers, on stage as performers, in studios and galleries as visual artists, or in top graduate schools to further their education.

Again, welcome to the Department of Visual and Performing Art and our new website. If you are visiting, we invite you to stay awhile and get to know us. If you are a prospective student, we hope that the Department of Visual and Performing Arts will be your new home.

With best wishes,

Dr. Edward Surface, Interim Chair
Department of Visual and Performing Arts
