The Amphibian and Reptile Collections
About the Collections:
The Collection of Amphibians and Reptiles began in the late 1960's with the efforts of Drs. Royce Ballinger, Alvin Flury, and Gordon Creel. Their efforts were joined by Dr. Gerald G. Raun in the early 1970's. Dr. Raun made large additions to the collection, bringing the total to more than 10,000 specimens, Mr. Raymond Stone curated the collection from 1983 to 1985. Under the present curation of Dr. J Kelly McCoy, the collection now numbers 14,000 specimens. Most specimens are from west central to north central Texas, but other areas of the United States and Mexico are also represented. The collection includes very large series of many Concho Valley species collected by Dr. Royce Ballinger and his students. Voucher specimens from surveys of Devil's River State Natural Area amd Monohans Sandhills State Park are housed in the collection. There is also a significant number of specimens from northern Mexico acquired from Tarleton State University.
